Great schools begin with the people in them

I’ve spent about twenty years in classrooms and school leadership, in the U.S. and overseas. One thing keeps proving true: the improvements that last start with people. Programs come second.

Invest in your teachers. Listen to your students. Take time to learn what a community is actually dealing with, which matters even more in rural schools, where the context is easy to miss from the outside. Do that, and engagement and achievement tend to follow. Technology and new initiatives have their place, but they work best when they’re supporting relationships and trust.

This is where I’ll write about what I’ve seen work: staff development, student engagement, and leading change in the schools that need it most. Practical notes, grounded in research, from someone still doing the work.

Thanks for reading. I’m glad you’re here.
